You wrote the original draft for this novel when you were only sixteen! How much of EYES IN THE MIRROR had to be re-worked before publishing?
I looked back at the original version of Eyes in the Mirror recently and was surprised to see how much of it had actually remained the same. There are paragraphs from the first draft (which I handwrote in a spiral notebook) that are still in the version that Sourcebooks published! That being said, I did a lot of rewriting when I came back to it. Having the years away created a great opportunity for me to come back to the book with a fresh perspective. I used the original as a guide for where I wanted things to go, but there are chapters that I almost entirely rewrote. What got you interested in the concept of an alternate dimension? What made you pick mirrors as a portal? I think the idea of a mirror being the opposite of what you see (instead of the same as what you see) is what prompted the idea of an alternate dimension. I wondered if the things you see in the mirror are the opposite (what’s right is left and what’s left is right), then couldn’t the people be opposites too? The idea of an alternate dimension was a tool for me- something that let me look at the same situation from multiple opposing perspectives, which is what I really loved doing with these characters. What would your alternate self be like? That’s a hard question for me to answer! I think in some ways, both Dee and Samara are alternate personalities of mine. They both handle things really differently than I would but in ways I often admire. Samara is much more impulsive than I am and because of that gets to have a whole host of exciting experiences. Dee, on the other hand, is a chameleon, reacting in different ways to different people and putting everyone she meets at ease, a trait I think anyone would envy. If I had to pick one trait that my alternate self would have though, I think she would be extraordinarily quick witted. She would never leave an awkward message she wanted to take back or think of the perfect response 6 hours later. I think I’d want my alternate self to be able to do that so she could teach me how… EYES IN THE MIRROR is written in alternating perspectives. Whose narration did you enjoy writing more—Samara’s or Dee’s? Why? I loved writing from both of these characters’ perspectives. They both had a knack for surprising me- Samara could be more difficult at times because of her propensity for recklessness. She often did things that I didn’t expect or that weren’t in my outline. I remember actually getting mad at her when she brought me down a path I felt unprepared for. That was a challenge, but also exciting. Dee on the other hand, often understood things better than I expected her to and reacted in ways that were more calculated than I realized. I would find that she had been planning something for chapters, which made developing her inner eye really fun to develop. I don’t think I could choose a favorite. What’s one thing readers would be surprised to find out about EYES IN THE MIRROR? I think a lot of people would be surprised to know that the book isn’t written only from Dee and Samara’s perspectives. There are places where I felt like to really get inside characters’ heads, I needed to write out the same thing happening from his or her perspective as was happening in the chapter of the book. For example, I have the second chapter written almost entirely from Dee’s mom’s perspective. I have a series of conversations from Jamie’s perspective. Dee and Samara are definitely not the only two whose heads I’ve tried to get into, even though theirs are the only perspectives you read in the book. Exchange program is originally was “exchanging of students” from two counties or more. Yet, nowadays a trade off of students between countries is not necessary anymore; it is now a program in which a student study and live in a foreign country even without a trade off of students. If majority of the youth today has the interest and capacity of participating in exchange program then we are like opening the whole nation to openness and working on differences between countries. In participating in the community, in doing what they are doing and in making lasting friendship and correspondence in the host country is a way of immersing students in the host country’s culture. A first hand experience of the other culture; of feeling what they feel, of knowing their concerns, of knowing their aspirations, meeting their families and going through what they encounter can make a very radical difference of one's perspective and personality. · Acquiring Social Awareness.
